With around 35–40% of households owning at least one dog, pet-friendly amenities have become an increasingly valuable feature for residential communities and commercial developments alike. Whether you’re planning a large municipal dog park or a smaller space for an apartment complex, a dedicated dog exercise area can enhance your property while serving a significant proportion of your residents.

Before you even begin, you have to ask: Where will it be located? How will it be funded? And how will you keep it clean?

At BagSpot, we have over 16 years of Parks and Recreation experience. We know what it takes to build a successful park from the ground up.

Must-Haves vs. Could-Haves

Fencing (Must-Have): Fencing will probably be the most expensive part of the project. The entrance should be double-gated to prevent accidental escapes.

Surfacing (Must-Have): If the area is grass, you must be able to rotate the activity so the grass can regrow. Otherwise, consider synthetic pet turf or hardscape near the entrances where wear-and-tear is highest.

Waste Management (Must-Have): This is non-negotiable. Place a BagSpot Premium Station (which includes a trashcan) right at the double-gated entrance. Supplement the rest of the park with BagSpot Standard Stations (dispenser and sign only) spaced strategically along the fence line.

Agility Equipment & Water Fountains (Could-Have): While nice amenities, these should only be added after the essential safety and sanitation infrastructure is securely in place.
